Six workers have been fired, two have been disciplined and at least 14 are under investigation for excessive use of computers in the state Department of Labor and Industries for personal e-mail, much of it sexual in nature. Could Yahoo! be feeling a privacy backlash? The portal duly blocked access to users who had been taking advantage of forwarding and POP3/SMTP e-mail services yesterday, as promised. Yahoo! will now charge $29.99 a year for the privilege. But some late sweeteners have appeared. Yahoo! had trailed the news with a special promotional offer, which expired on April 24, allowing users to buy back POP3 access with $10 off that $29.99 annual fee. If you've chosen MS Word for your e-mail editor in Outlook 2000 or 2002, you'll need to patch a flaw which enables script execution when a malicious memo is replied to or forwarded. Outlook blocks scripts when an HTML e-mail is viewed; but when Word is the editor, replying or forwarding calls it in an unprotected mode, and it then allows the script to run. Essentially, Word behaves as if a new memo were being created, a situation where security wouldn't be an issue. The actual flaw, then, is a failure to distinguish between a user's own e-mail and his modifications to someone else's. ... »

An email in circulation saying that nine women in Pretoria and Johannesburg died after being bitten by a spider is a hoax. The email claimed a report by a Dr Beverly Clark, in the Journal of the Medical Association (JMA), said the victims had died after being bitten by a "dangerous South American Blush Spider". It said the women's "symptoms" were fever, chills and vomiting, then muscular collapse, paralysis and death. Apparently a toxicologist discovered the women were bitten when they went to the toilets at restaurants in Johannesburg and Pretoria. ... »

Jordan Ritter, one of the developers of online music sharing service Napster, and software developer Vipul Ved Prakash plan to introduce anti-spam technology next month that reportedly goes further than other such technologies by making judgments about e-mail and learning patterns of spam. The developers claim tests of the technology, called Folsom, on e-mail networks containing 40 percent to 60 percent spam reduced unwanted messages to almost zero. They also said it blocks fewer legitimate e-mails than other technological solutions. ... »
