Glitch catches Road Runner's e-mail |

AOL Time Warner Internet customers in Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi have seen their e-mail service disrupted since Monday because of hardware problems in an Austin data center. Many of the 100,000 customers of the Road Runner high-speed Internet service had not received e-mail since Monday morning, when a server at the regional data center in Austin took itself off-line to begin unscheduled maintenance. Destructive "Naked Wife" e-mail worm on the loose |

Several anti-virus companies are warning that a potentially damaging Internet worm called "Naked@MM" or "NakedWife" is on the loose in Europe, the United States and Canada. One company reported finding evidence that the worm, which spreads via e-mail when the victim tries to access a flash movie of what is supposedly someone's naked wife, may have originated in Brazil. According to information from McAfee, Trend Micro, Symantec and Computer Associates, the mass mailing worm is attached to an e-mail as "NakedWife.exe." The Subject line says "Fw: Naked Wife" and the body of the e-mail says "My wife never look like that! ;-) Best Regards, (incorporates sender's name)." ... »

UCA student says she received e-mail that was upsetting |

The University of Central Arkansas Police Department recently investigated an improper communication. According to the report, student Madeline Gill said Monday she received a disturbing e-mail. The nature of the message was not reported, but the e-mail was forwarded to the UCA Police Department criminal investigations division. It was determined the e-mail came from James Prisock, a student at West Point Military Academy. UCA officers contacted West Point and forwarded the information to their criminal investigators. Surgery on Mailings Is a Success for Clinic |

A switch from generic donation requests to targeted mailings by the Lahey Clinic has cut costs 40 percent while achieving the same results. The clinic, a nonprofit practice of more than 500 physicians providing medical services throughout Massachusetts, had always sent 150,000 direct mail packages to donors and prospective donors in May and November, said David Welbourn, vice president of philanthropy at the clinic. An email-borne virus which touts itself as a picture of someone's "Naked Wife", but instead delivers a payload which can cripple a Windows PC, is doing the rounds. Nebraska Gov. Signs Ban on Prize-Promotion Fees |

Nebraska Gov. Mike Johanns said yesterday that he signed a bill on March 1st banning direct mailers and telemarketers from charging consumers fees in prize promotions. Violations of the law, known as the Telemarketing and Prize Promotions Act, will carry civil fines of up to $2,000 per violation and would take effect 90 days after the end of the current legislative session, scheduled for June 1. The bill, introduced by state Sen. Douglas A. Kristensen, also makes it illegal to misrepresent the source of a prize notice or the value of a prize. ... »
