Annoying Worm Writer Wants Job |
The latest virus to hit e-mail inboxes is little more than a slight variant of a year-old virus. But it's beginning to resemble never-ending installments of a lousy horror movie series with only minor plot variations. But antiviral firms are reporting that the latest variant of Klez is spreading rapidly, just as its most recent predecessor did just last month.

Napster Co-Developer Offers Anti-Spam Tool |
Jordan Ritter, one of the developers of online music sharing service Napster, and software developer Vipul Ved Prakash plan to introduce anti-spam technology next month that reportedly goes further than other such technologies by making judgments about e-mail and learning patterns of spam. The developers claim tests of the technology, called Folsom, on e-mail networks containing 40 percent to 60 percent spam reduced unwanted messages to almost zero. They also said it blocks fewer legitimate e-mails than other technological solutions. ... »

In response to a plea from Amazon.com head Jeff Bezos, thousands of e-mails have been sent to the Authors Guild protesting the guild's call for writers to remove links on their Web sites to the online retailer. The Authors Guild has criticized Amazon's policy of offering used editions of new books, noting that neither authors nor publishers receive royalties, which they do on new books that also sell for more than the used editions. ... »

What are e-mail extractors for? |
Most people think e-mail extractor is a one from spam programs. It is a major spammer's tool, indeed. But, like any other tool, e-mail extractors can be used for many different applications. The very fact that you are extracting emails list from an HTML document on a local disc or on a web-site doesn't explicitly mean that you are going to send unwanted messages to the addresses extracted.

Watchdog Group Questions Legality of Chicago DM Show Promo |
The Chicago Association of Direct Marketing rescinded an offer late last week after an Illinois anti-gambling organization accused it of running an illegal promotion for next week's Direct Marketing Days conference. The promotion, of which there were at least two versions -- a letter and a self-mailer -- offered early registrants a chance to win four direct marketing reference guides. The offer said in part, "We're only giving away 15 sets - and you can only be entered in the drawing if you pre-register for DM Days right now." ... »

Age no bar to loving and using e-mail |
Recently I was asked to photograph a going-away party at a nursing home. At the event, an 80-something woman asked for some copies of my work. I asked if she had an e-mail address, at which point she drew herself up to full height and said, "Well, of course!" Clearly, e-mail isn't just for we youngsters who use it to speed up life's daily pace. Senior citizens, who may be perfectly satisfied to move at a slower rate, use the technology to stay in touch with friends and family; with nary a whiff of business. ... »
