  [  April 10, 2002  ]     Campaign Reform Could Boost E-Mail
Campaign finance reform is expected to result in more candidate dollars being spent on direct marketing and, as a result, also could give e-mail marketing a boost. President Bush on March 27 signed the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002, or H.R. 2356, which after the fall elections will outlaw unlimited "soft money" donations, or those to a party from businesses, unions and others for party-building activities. ... »

Arthur Andersen LLP, its reputation shredded and its prospects bleak, began firing about a quarter of its U.S.-based work force Monday, sometimes using voice mail and e-mail to deliver the news. Andersen, reeling from its role as former auditor of the bankrupt Enron Corp., said it's cutting 7,000 employees. The company said the firings will occur over several months while it seeks to sell operations and survive as a much smaller firm. ... »

Since September, unsolicited e-mail — or spam as it's commonly known — has grown by 340 per cent. That's more than triple the rate of growth for e-mail over-all. Spam's a cheap-and-easy a marketing medium for those with something to sell. Governments, Internet service providers and consumer groups around the world are trying to combat the problem. There are entire call centres and corporate divisions dedicated to the eradication of spam. But for a number of reasons there's no easy solution, so the flood keeps growing. ... »

[  April 6, 2002  ]     Not every spam is spread thick with sleazy motives
When you get spammed, it is too easy to get angry and irritated, curse the sender and file a complaint. One mail can become the proverbial last straw. But behind each of the million spams in this cybercity there is a story that might not be exactly what you expect. I recently received an e-mail from Kim Wilson, lead singer for the Fabulous Thunderbirds. ... »

  [  April 5, 2002  ]     E-mail's delicate etiquette
E-mail etiquette is a delicate matter. That explains the many Web sites covering the subject. But the plethora of "how to" guides does not help when the quandary is psychological and rooted in the insecurity of having spent too many years corresponding on paper. .Is it rude to use the "reply" function? The thing always feels a little cheap, as though one is returning the sender's stationery with a note scrawled on the back. ... »
