Permission-based e-mail marketer CheetahMail is teaming up with TMXinteractive to offer streaming multimedia content directly in the body of e-mail messages. The companies announced yesterday that they entered into a strategic alliance to make their respective technologies and services available to each other's clients. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. TMXinteractive, Conshohocken, PA, integrates fully animated content and audio into the body of an e-mail that play when the message is opened. Automobile tire manufacturer Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. is attempting to bolster its tarnished image by creating a Web site that offers tire safety data and information. The company also has created an e-mail campaign to encourage customers to drive safely. The new Web site, www.tiresafety.com, provides size and classification information, proper maintenance schedules, technology data and a replacement guide. It also offers a free tire pressure gauge to those who register. Dutch police have arrested a man suspected of writing the Anna Kornikova computer virus. Police in the northern province of Friesland are holding a 20-year old who faces possible charges of damaging computers through releasing the worm, offences which carry a jail term of up to four years. The man, who cannot be named under Dutch law, turned himself in to police this morning on advice from his parents, according to a Dutch wire report ... »

ClicVU, New York, a provider of Web advertising services, debuted a service last week that allows consumers to avoid unsolicited e-mails by letting them send and receive messages without having to reveal their e-mail addresses. The service, Spamex, creates anonymous e-mail addresses that people can use to have online information — such as newsletters, sweepstakes entries or transactions — forwarded to their legitimate e-mail addresses. When users begin to receive unsolicited e-mails, they can disable that Spamex e-mail address and create a new one, the company said ... »

FreeEdgar.com, an online portal service that features financial news, information and Securities and Exchange Commission documents, said yesterday that it will start charging many users for an e-mail alert service it used to provide free. The portal, a service of EDGAR Online Inc., Norwalk, CT, said its SEC e-mail alert service, which tracks new documents added to the SEC's EDGAR database of financial filings, will remain free to anyone who wants to track five or fewer companies.
